Problem & context
Choosing a model should not require another chat interface. The editor’s tools and conversation history need to keep working across different model protocols.
My contribution
Built a TypeScript extension around VS Code’s native model-provider API, separating connections, authentication, streaming transport and editor integration. Added ChatGPT sign-in, API-key connections, tool-call continuity and optional multiline suggestions accepted with Tab.
Decisions & tradeoffs
Keep the editor’s native experience.
Integrate with the model picker, chat and tools rather than introducing a separate chat panel.
Give credentials and code context clear boundaries.
Store credentials in VS Code SecretStorage, support cancellation and limit code-suggestion context to an excerpt of the current file.
Outcome
A working private extension. Isolated editor runs demonstrated native chat, continuation after tool calls and agent edits. A later 0.2.7 pilot retained the same Local chat after reload and accepted automatic multiline suggestions with Tab. The presentation shows development release 0.1.5; the extension is not publicly distributed.
